Digital Fundraising Research: How European Environmental Nonprofits Adapted to Post-Pandemic Giving

The pandemic permanently changed how donors interact with nonprofits. A coalition of European environmental organizations came to Altruvia because their digital fundraising wasn't meeting expectations. To find out why, we followed donors from first click to recurring gift.

The Challenge: Understanding the New Digital Donor

Analytics showed plenty of traffic and engagement, but conversion was disappointing. The organizations needed to understand what stopped visitors from becoming donors, and why the barriers looked different in each European market.

"We assumed our German and French donors were similar because they're both European. The research showed us how wrong that assumption was.

The Insights: What Digital Donors Actually Experience

  • •

Trust signals matter differently: German donors prioritized detailed financial transparency, while UK donors responded more to celebrity endorsements and media coverage.

  • •

Mobile friction is fatal: Donors who hit any difficulty on mobile abandoned at 5x the rate of desktop users, and rarely came back.

  • •

Impact immediacy: Donors wanted to see quick, tangible results from their giving, not long-term project timelines.

  • •

Local connection: Pan-European campaigns underperformed compared to locally-relevant environmental messaging.

The Results

The coalition rebuilt its digital experience market by market. Within six months, overall digital conversion rose 62%, and mobile donations tripled in the markets that had been underperforming.
